Intro to Ep- This weeks episode is about…
Blacksmith idiums- Strike while the iron is hot.
So with that lets get into it…

Topic-
Strike while the iron is hot.
Owning opportunity.

Our meaning today vs. what this means to a blacksmith.

When Forging – heat, hammer, repeat.

When forging something – HARD WORK. Pounding steel into a meaningful shape.

Striking while the iron is hot is critical because your work is MUCH more EFFECTIVE. For the exact same amount of work you get much better results.

Not about “work smarter, not harder”- Smarter, and Harder. – Mike Rowe.

This is all about moving quickly because there is an opportunity to be seized.

Iron cools quickly. Right out of the forge, and onto the Anvil.

Striking the iron also cools it, from the hammer, and from the anvil.

Doing work when conditions are ideal, vs the same amount of effort when conditions have deteriorated. If you don’t strike while the iron is hot, don’t expect to get the same amount of work done.

Not talking about necessarily seizing an opportunity, but creating them, and seizing them.

The blacksmith heats the iron. He creates the opportunities to make his work, and efforts effective.

As men, we are not usually very good at this. Usually because we are more reactive, the proactive.

Blacksmith walks by, and finds the iron to be hot, runs and grabs a hammer and starts to work.

Neither should we.

As men we typically react to the things in our life, and often times with great surprise to things that should not be surprising.

Things like slacking off at work and getting let go. Having sex and having a kid. Not spending anytime with God and not being close with Him.

So my encouragement is to start living proactively. Expectations, and looking ahead with God are a great thing. Not in a way that promotes anxiety

“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6:34‬ ‭ESV‬‬

In a way that takes responsibility for your own choices, and actions.

Proactivity starts with taking responsibility…

You are where you are today because of the choices you have made.

Being proactive is about actively choosing how you want to respond or react to something either before it happens, or creating the situation before you may need to respond to something.

Let me give you an example-

Say you’re driving in a car and a child’s ball suddenly rolls out infront of you. You quickly have to react to that situation, do you just go ahead and run it over? It’s just a ball. Do you slam on your breaks? Do you swerve out of the way? It all depends…

The reactive choice isn’t really a choice, its a reaction. Like an instinct you will just do what you are going to do.

The proactive choice is aware of more. The thought that something may suddenly come in front of your car has already happened. You can then think about what may be best in that situation. Maybe you can just slow down, because you aren’t speeding through the neighborhood. Maybe you can safely swerve around the ball. It all depends on what you have previously thought about, and what you have most recently observed.

Striking while the iron is hot, and owning opportunity require responsibility and proactivity.

If there is something in your life that you would like to be different you have to take responsibility for where you are today, and proactively choose differently.

This is not about being in the right place, at the right time. It is about creating the right place, and being there at that time.

So take the step you need to with God, and set up the things needed to do the things He has called you to do.

Mid roll-
If you go our website you can find some more resources on how to do that, and get involved with what we are doing in the lives of men. We are also completely funded on donations from people like you. Give. $20 a month 18 months

Until we can get some legit sponcers on here I’m just gonna keep talking about stuff I like.

Mtn Dew- Awesome. Please stop trying to make other flavors. Gross.

Back into topic-
Striking while the iron is hot. Taking responsibility. Being proactive, not reactive.

Another part of Striking while the iron is hot is about getting other crap out of the way so you can strike while it is hot.

As a smith if you have crap on the floor, your tools, hammer and tongs, etc. are not where you need them you can’t strike while its hot.

The same is true of our lives.

Some of us cant because we have garbage in the way. For us, that means the first proactive step is owning that garbage, and doing something about it.

How can you find your strength as a man if you are homeless? Or your health isn’t taken care of? Or you wont do the uncomfortable things necessary to make the changes in your life that God wants you to?

Cleaning up is not usually fun. Metaphorically or Physically, but it is necessary to move forward as a man, and in your walk with God.

Cleaning is draining, and hard work at least real deep cleaning.

Do you have some cleaning and organizing to do?

What about the crap that needs cleaning in our lives we love to hate?

Dealing with sin has never been easy in my experience, but it is usually the thing that is holding me down, and holding me back from the good things that God wants for me.

Men hear me – You have to deal with the sin in your life. Getting Drunk is not okay. Looking at Porn is not okay. Not doing what you know is right is not okay.

We are imperfect and will always struggle, but we have the power and strength to choose differently now because of Christ.

Struggling vs Habitual

God does not want us to live in habitual sin.

Struggling is not just remorse it is repentance.

If you want something in you life to be different, you have to choose to live differently. Christ gave you that freedom. It may not feel like it, but he did.

“Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
‭‭John‬ ‭8:34-36‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:17-18‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Habitual sin- Practicing sin

“If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭1:6‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Repent. Confess.

“Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭3:19‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭1:9‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The best way to rid yourself of darkness is to bring in the light.

As leaders… How do we strike while the iron is hot?

Setting the stage for effective work?
Check your self before you wreck – others.

“Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7:4‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Self-
Take responsibility.
Be proactive.
Set up for effective work.
Strike the iron while its hot.

Help others-
Take responsibility.
Be proactive.
Set up for effective work.
Strike the iron while its hot.

Momentum builders and killers.

As leaders, and men when we begin doing what we have been talking about we gain momentum.

Why is momentum important? Even more effective. Keep going to keep that momentum, and help others do the same.

Momentum killers- Think of what these can be for you. The more momentum you have build the easier it is to get rid of momentum killers. Be on the look out for them and get rid of them asap.

Momentum destroyers. Loose all momentum, and have to start all over again. Super crap choice. Or had something super crap happen to you.

Start again-
Take responsibility.
Be proactive.
Set up for effective work.
Strike the iron while its hot.

That just about wraps up our 3rd episode. I hope you enjoyed it. I am enjoying serving you through it. Our next episode we will finish our series on idioms of blacksmithing, and how we can learn from them, and apply them to our lives. So be sure you catch those and continue your journey with me as men.

As you may know I love practical teaching, and being a doer. So here is something you can do this week to find your strength. Take inventory of where you are at in your life right now. Are you in a place where you can strike while the iron is hot? Why, or why not? Are you willing to make the changes needed to get to that place? What are some of your momentum killers? Pray through that with God this week, and see what He revivals to you.

I know that I may not know you, but I pray for you regularly. Know that God is for you, as am I. You may be in a great place right now, striking the iron while its hot, and you may be in a very dark place with a lot of crap in your workshop. Know that God is with you, and wants to help you. That you are His son. He wants great things for you. And loves you more then you can imagine.

Don’t give up. Don’t give in. Continue to fight the good fight, and find your strength.

I am David with Anvil ministries. May your journey continue…
